OUTSKIRTS OF ILGAR
Written and Directed by Deniz Sulan

Outskirts of Ilgar follows the traces of the forgotten cultural memory of the
Alevi community in Ardahan Damal region. The traditional poems, lullabies,
laments and narrations heard from 60-65 year old Damal women, who are the last
generation who still verbally transmit the culture, are the last timbres. Due to
the modifications of the relationship between nature and man, the essence that
result in the following poetry has disappeared- I farmed, sawed, made rest/ Not
even satisfied the cruel fate. The Turcoman women, who put into words what they
live but not what they hear, are silent now. Their nightingale-like voices
stopped, their telling-lips are sealed. The documentary is a journey into the
minds of the Damal women who are resisting against time.
Deniz Sulan was born in 1981, in Damal, as the youngest of six children. He left
Damal for his university education in 2000. During his studies at the Department
of Radio Television and Cinema of Istanbul University, Sulan made his first
documentary called "Women Who Wear the Rainbow" which was honoured by Special
Jury Award in the 6th International Golden Safran Documentary Film Festival. It
was also introduced in the 2nd Akbank Short Film Festival in 2005. Following his
graduation from the university, he spent a year in London to improve his
language skills. His second documentary "Outskirts of Ilgar" is sponsored by the
Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Currently he is studying for a masters
degree in Istanbul University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Radio
Television and Cinema.
