Aslında her
temelde Hüseyin Mert Erverdi, Rıza Nazım Ulusoy ve Michael Fakesch’in yaratıcı
Şu an üzerinde çalıştığımız yada yakın gelecekte
çalışacağımız yeni projeler için de bize çok şey öğreten, yol gösteren bir proje
oldu. Gelecekten Anılar, bağımsız bir kısa film olduğundan kendisini yaratan
ekibin hayallerinden parçalar taşıyor. Umarım sizleri de bu hayalin içine bir
nebze olsun dahil edebiliriz
MEMORIES FROM FUTURE
The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where even the most intimate
memories are tightly controlled. A soldier jeaously guards his last memory, the
image of his lover, while his past, present and future become indistinguishably intertwined.
"The pure present is an ungraspable advance of the past devouring the future. In
truth, all sensation is already memory."

There are 6 characters in your movie - two soldiers, two scientists, one mutant
and a girl. Tell us a few words about the story of the movie.
First of all, I think it is important to emphasize the fact that there is no
story, at least not in the classical sense of storytelling. But of course I had
the notion of a story when i thought of making it happen. The movie took place
in a post-apocalyptic world where even the most intimate memories are tightly
controlled. A soldier jealously guards his last memory, while his past, present
and future become indistinguishably intertwined. It is more like an experimental
piece about the nature of memories and the way we sense time (more like a
Bergsonian notion of the durée) itself. It is all about the affect the audience
perceived via strong visual and auditory atmosphere which is created through
sound design, art direction and cinematography. It needs not be analyzed but
experienced. The movie is open to interpretations of all sorts and Can be
understood differently with every other seeing. Like a childhood memory which is
re-written every time when it is called back, remembered if you will.
Watching the trailer, I saw a more adventure film than a sci-fi one. Does it
really belong to the last category?
As I said it before it is in a sense more of an experimental movie which has
science fiction genre elements in it but it is definitely not an action-adventure
science fiction movie. Maybe trailer is a bit misleading but after watching the
movie there will be no doubts about it. Also however I am using these categories
like SF, fantasy etc, I don’t believe in them. If we really have to make a
distinction then I prefer the fantastic and the mimetic distinction which is
more universal. Every movie or let’s say artwork in general, however fantastic
it is, also has a bit of mimetic qualities in essence. This is also true for the
other side as even the most notoriously realistic gritty film has some fantastic
elements to it. Mimetic steams directly from everyday life, a reiteration of the
familiar, the fantastic however is in a sense a journey to the dark side of the
moon, discovery of the unfamiliar. So, yes I think this film belongs to the
fantastic and therefore to its subcategory, SF.
At the trailer, we see the girl for a seconds - a totally different image of the
other scenes. What does the girl symbolize?
Of course I have a complete picture of what she symbolizes in the movie. I think
about her for a long time while writing the movie, I even thought about the
color of her scarf thoroughly let her alone. But it is up to the viewer to
interpret. Maybe she is a memory of a loved one. A wife, girlfriend or even a
total stranger you saw at the corner of the street which strangely haunts your
dreams.
I'd like to tell us about your role at the movie. Did you help in other parts of
the movie - costumes, lights, camera etc - or you gave your attention in
directing?
Besides producing and directing, i did the writing, cinematography, design and
collect all the costumes and props for the movie. I collect some of the pieces
of costumes from internet and others from local shops and some I tailored them
according to my original designs. We also did comic quality storyboards for the
whole movie. Almost every scene in the final movie matches the storyboards
perfectly. I always stay long in pre-production as it directly affects the
quality of the end result.
How much money did the whole project cost you? I'd like to tell us about this
because I saw pictures where the crew make masks for the actors and there are a
lot of costumes and equipments for the movie.
It roughly cost around 7000$-8000$ range. The face makeup of the mutant is done
by the special fx house located in Istanbul which is called dukkan-ul hayal they
did the prosthetic makeup as a favor for the project, the sound design done by
the acclaimed sound designer Michael Fakesch and the post-production work done
by my close friend R.Nazım Ulusoy.
I saw a picture of you where you handle the camera and a musician, a saxophonist,
plays the music. Did you have music at the duration of shooting?
That photo is from the green screen back stage and the saxophonist is actually
one of the actors playing a scientist. It was a set brake and he was improvising
at that time.
7.How easy was it to shoot in an abandoned factory? How easy is it to have a
license for shooting and making movies in Turkey?
It was a bit risky because of the condition of the location but we complete the
shoot without any injuries. As for the permit to shoot there, it was a bit
problematic because it was an old government power plant so we really had to
insist on getting the permit but after a while they let us to shoot there for 2
days.
The movie appeared in many other film festivals. Is there, in Turkey, a film
festival with these categories of movies - sci-fi, fantasy, horror?
Yes, it is completed in the September of 2010 and for 6 months now it’s touring
the festivals and already selected for many festivals and the future seems
bright. As for the other question, no there are no specialized festivals for
horror and SF here because of the simple fact that there are not many genre
films. In a sense “memories from the future” is the first film in Turkey that
has strong SF genre elements. This is an important point because one of my goals
is to produce feature length SF and fantasy films in Turkey. We have some comedy
films which are using genre elements but no serious attempts so far.
Have you been to Greece ever? Are you planning to come to Greece for the film
festival?
Yes, back in 2005 while on an interrail trip, I visited many locations around
Greece and met new people there. As for the festival, I’d really liked to but I
am working on a new film now and it seems like I am going to miss the festival.
Maybe next time with my new film who knows?
