London Turkish Film Festival Opening Gala Night
The Opening Night Gala of the 17th London Turkish Film Festival on November 24,
2011 brought a special excitement and glamour to Leicester Square's Odeon West
End Cinema with a memorable mix of awards, stars and a movie premiere.
A record number of outstanding films made the short list for this year's Digital
Distribution Award, sponsored by Digiturk, which annually provides distribution
and promotion of a Turkish film to UK-wide audiences. A distinguished
international jury, including Turkish star Mehmet Aslantug, awarded the £30,000
prize to HOME (Yurt) the first feature to be written and directed by Muzaffer
Özdemir, known internationally for his role in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's UZAK for
which he won the Cannes Best Actor Award. The actor received a rapturous
reception from the Odeon's capacity audience as he received the Golden Wings
statuette.
Congratulations to SHADOWS AND FACES, the winner of the 2011 Peoples Choice
Award as voted for by audiences throughout the Festival. Derviş Zaim's powerful
and moving story, set in Cyprus in 1963 at the start of the conflict between
Turks and Greeks, was also an award winner at the Ankara and Antalya Festivals
and its combination of engrosssing human drama and contemporary relevance now
makes it a worthy winner of the LTFF Golden Wings Award.
Claudia Cardinale Hulya Kocyigit
The opening night audience was equally delighted to welcome international movie
legend Claudia Cardinale, star of films by Fellini, Visconte and Leone, to
introduce the night's UK premiere of the delightful BEING ITALIAN WITH SIGNORA
ENRICA. A great performance and a great finale to a memorable celebration of
Turkish Cinema.
The presentation of the Golden Wings Lifetime Achievement award is always a
highlight of the evening and there has been no more popular a winner than the "Angel"
of Turkish cinema Hulya Kocyigit, star of more than 200 films in a 50 year
career. An on-screen reminder of her life and work could only really be followed
by a standing ovation for the star herself, and a heartfelt reception it
certainly was.

Mehmet Aslantug
Mehmet Aslantuğ is a leading Turkish actor, writer, director and producer who
has been a familiar face on cinema and tv screens since 1981. He began his
career in experimental theatre and turned to full time acting after abandoning
university. His films include "Before Sunrise", "Firefly", "Lobster Pot", "Anatomy
of a Woman" and "Scorpio's Ride" which was screened in the Un Certain Regard
section at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Television appearances include the
recent "Lady's Farm" and "An Istanbul Fairytale". Also in 2010 Aslantuğ directed
his first feature film "Second Half Of Love". He is the winner of over 30 best
actor awards.
Gareth Evans
Gareth Evans works as an independent moving image / event curator, editor and
writer. He is Co-Director of the production agency Artevents. He edited the
moving image journal Vertigo and now co-edits the arts magazine Artesian. In
2008, he was awarded a Breakthrough Grant by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to
produce "The Re-Enchantment", a series of artists' responses to place and its
meanings. He has curated many international film seasons and festivals.
Dave Calhoun
Dave Calhoun is an editor and film critic and has been Film Editor of Time Out
London for the past seven years. Before that he was Deputy Editor of Dazed &
Confused magazine. Dave regularly broadcasts on Sky News and the BBC World
Service and has written for newspapers including The Times and The Guardian. His
favourite films for 2010 included Mike Leigh's "Another Year", Clio Barnard's "The
Arbor" and Banksy's "Exit Through The Gift Shop".
Helen de Witt
Helen de Witt is Festivals Producer at the British Film Institute with
responsibility for the London Film Festival and the Lesbian and Gay Film
Festival. She has taught Film Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London
for many years and has published articles on independent cinema, artists' film
and video and football. Helen was Vice-Chair of LUX Artists' Moving Image
Distribution for five years and has been Chair of east Londonbased, Four Corners
Film since 2008.
Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award
LTFF Digiturk Golden Wings Award
Now in its 17th year, the pioneering LTFF is the first British film festival to
offer a distribution contract to the winner of one of its major awards. The
Golden Wings Digital Distribution Award, introduced in 2009, recognises the
growth of digital exhibition across Britain and Ireland thus enabling many more
moviegoers to sample the delights of contemporary Turkish cinema. An
international jury will select the winner from a short list of outstanding films.
The winner will receive a £30,000 UK and Ireland digital distribution contract
to cover the production of digital copies and distribution and marketing costs.
Last year's winner, Semih Kaplanoglu's 'Bal' (Honey) will begin its UK release
in July 2011
The People's Choice Award
This will once again be voted for by audiences attending LTFF screenings at The
Odeon West End, the Rio Cinema, Dalston and the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly Circus.
The winner will be announced at the end of the festival and receive the Golden
Wings trophy. Last year's award went to Ferzan Ozpetek's vivacious 'Loose
Cannons'. The director received his award at a reception in Istanbul.
The Life Time Achievement Award
First awarded in 2009 to legendary actress Turkan Soray, the LTFF is delighted
to have the opportunity to introduce a great Turkish film maker to British
audiences. Be they actors, directors, producers, writers or technicians, the
recipient will be honoured for a career of outstanding achievement and will
receive the magnificent Golden Wings trophy. Legendary Sener Sen was awarded
Golden Wings Life Time Achievement Award last year and he received his crown at
the glittering Opening Gala event at the Empire Leicester Square.

Yusuf has started primary school and is learning how to read and write. His
father, Yakup works far in the depths of a frightening forest. He is a honey-gatherer
who hangs his hand-made beehives in the upper branches of tall trees in the
forest. The forest is a place of mystery for Yusuf, who often accompanies his
father. One morning Yusuf describes the dream he had seen that night to his
father. This dream is to be an ever-lasting secret between the father and the
son. On that same day, as Yusuf struggles to read before his entire classmates
the text the teacher has given him, he begins suddenly to stutter and is
ridiculed by his classmates.
Yakup goes to a distant forest, looking for the Caucasian bees which seem to be
quickly and mysteriously disappearing. His father gone, Yusuf slips into
silence. Yusuf’s mother, Zehra (28), who works in the tea fields, is saddened to
see her son in this state. No matter how much she tries, she cannot get her son
to speak. Days pass and Zehra and Yusuf becomes anxious when Yakup does not
return. Zehra sends Yusuf to spend the sacred Mirac Night (the night of the
Ascension of the Prophet) with his grandmother, who lives quite a distance away
from their village. There, Yusuf listens to the story of the Mirac, and believes
that his father, who to the lad resembles the Holy Prophet, will return. The
next day they fail to find Yakup at the festival being held on Sis (mist)
Mountain. Yusuf goes deep into the forest to search for his father. Will the
dream he has seen come true? *Bal (Honey) is on general release in the UK from

German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards
SOAS, London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies, will be
screening Feo Aladag’s breathtaking 2010 feature film When We Leave (Die Fremde)
on Saturday 21st May as part of the Diasporic Family in Cinema Conference.
The two winners of the LTFF Friends prize draw will be attending the screening
of the film which is a gripping, complex and cliché-free portrait of a family in

a Q & A with the filmmaker. The film has garnered numerous worldwide awards and
nominations for director, cast and crew most notably as the German entry for the
Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.
The Diasporic Family in Cinema conference examines the representation of the
diasporic family in contemporary European cinema, Hollywood and Bollywood. It
provides a platform for dialogue with filmmakers and producers and aims to
explore how they negotiate between their artistic ambitions, the demands of the
public funding bodies and the market in their construction of diasporic family
life on screen. The Conference is presented in association with the Screen
Studies Group, University of London, and the Ciné Lumière and co -hosted by the
Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway, the Centres for Film and Media Studies
and for Migration and Diaspora Studies.
'Circo' USA/Mexico Aaron Schock
The Institut français’ annual festival of world culture, Mosaïques, now in its
13th edition, will take place from 2 - 9 June at Ciné lumière, Rich Mix,
Rivington Place and SOAS. With films from fifteen different countries, including
several UK premieres and preview screenings, the programme offers audiences a
selection of the most outstanding new World Cinema, and continues to showcase
major directors who bring a diverse range of cultures closer to home. It offers
a place on the big screen for films which would not necessarily be shown
otherwise in the UK and enhances cross-cultural exchange. Mosaïques celebrates
the diversity of cultures and hopes to further the debate on the position of
foreign cultures in Western society.
'Shadada' Germany 2010 Burhan Qurbani
LTFF director Vedide Kaymak will be giving a talk after the screening of Burhan
Qurbani’s film Shadada (Germany - 2010) at Ciné Lumière on Sunday the 5th June
at 9pm. Afghanistan-born director Burhan Qurbani’s bold feature debut about the
lives of three young German-born Muslims living in today’s Berlin. Shadada was
nominated for the Golden Bear, Berlin International Film Festival 2010.

‘The London Turkish Film Festival’

After a long and snowy winter, the coldest for a hundred years, with its
cancelled flights, jammed airports and roads and unexpected school breaks, it’s
now finally time to put away those extra warm layers: Spring is finally here.
Spring glorious spring
Last year’s festival was a huge success and it was great to see you all there.
Audiences were bigger than ever: 5,000 admissions and the Festival was big news
across the UK, Turkey and Europe.
The 16th London Turkish Film Festival began with a glittering, emotional and
memorable opening night at the Empire Cinema. The legendary Sener Sen received
his Golden Wings Lifetime Achievement Award. The night ended with the world
premiere screening of Cagan Irmak’s ‘Sleeping Princess’.
The films of internationally acclaimed directors such as Reha Erdem appeared
alongside such new wave talents as Selim Demirdelen and Seren Yuce. We offered
seminars and post-film Q&A sessions which gave the audience an opportunity to
interact with leading figures from contemporary Turkish cinema.
The LTFF worked with the British Film Industry to recognise the best of Turkish
cinema through the LTFF Golden Wings Awards, including the innovative Digiturk
Digital Distribution Award which went to Semih Kaplanoglu’s, Bal (Honey).
Festival goers voted for Ferzan Ozpetek’s delightful look at family life, ‘Loose
Cannons’. The director received his People’s Choice Award on the 4th of January
in Istanbul, Feriye.

The LTFF was also proud to be the UK distributor of Asli Özge‘s urban drama ‘Men
on the Bridge’, the winner of the 2009 Digital Distribution Award, which had its
release at London’s BFI Southbank.
The 16th London Turkish Film Festival featured prominently in the national and
local press as well as on a number of the main Turkish TV Channels and TV shows.

British Council’den sinema girişimcilerine destek

British Council, Sinema - Televizyon alanında çalışan yaratıcı girişimcileri
destekleyip, film, televizyon ve animasyon alanında çalışmalarının önemini
vurgulamak amacıyla Yılın Genç Sinema - Televizyon Girişimcisi Yarışması’nı bu
sene ilk kez Türkiye’de de düzenliyor.
Yılın Genç Sinema - Televizyon Girişimcisi Yarışması programı, dünya çapında,
özellikle de gelişmekte olan ülkelerin sinema - televizyon sektöründe
gerçekleştirdikleri başarılı çalışmaları ve ortaklıkları desteklemeyi ve bu
alanlarda daha fazla genç girişimcilerin yer almasını teşvik etmeyi amaçlıyor.
Söz konusu yarışmayla hedeflenen, İngiltere’yle olan kültürel, yaratıcı ve
ticari bağları kullanarak, sinema - televizyon alanına uluslararası iş
dünyasındaki yenilikçi fikirleri taşıyabilmek. Jürisinde sinema yazarı Burcu
Aykar Şirin, Ermenistan Türkiye Sinema Platformu Koordinatörü Çiğdem Mater,
Antrakt Sinema Gazetesi Genel Yayın Yönetmeni Deniz Yavuz, Yönetmen Hüseyin
Karabey ve Yapımcı Nadir Öperli isimlerinin yer alacağı yarışma, uzun metraj
film, kısa film, belgesel, televizyon yapımları ve animasyon alanlarında
faaliyet gösteren veya belirtilen bu alanlarda festival veya tanıtım
organizasyonu düzenleyen bütün genç girişimcilere açık.
Yarışmayı kazanan kişi Türkiye’de Yılın Genç Sinema - Televizyon Girişimcisi
unvanını kazanıp 11 - 21 Ekim tarihleri arasında, 12 ülkeden gelecek olan
finalistlerin katılımıyla, İngiltere’de 20 Ekim’de düzenlenecek uluslararası
yarışmada Türkiye’yi temsil edecek. Tüm masrafları British Council tarafından
karşılanacak bu program kapsamında Türkiye finalisti İngiltere’nin önde gelen
uluslararası üne sahip sinema - televizyon sektörü çalışanlarıyla görüşüp,
tanışma fırsatı bulacak.
“Sinema - Televizyon” terimi uzun metraj film, kısa film, belgesel, televizyon
yapımları ve animasyonu içeriyor. Yarışmaya başvuracak kişilerin çalışmalarını,
bu yapımlarla ilgili olarak dağıtım, satış, sergi, sinema salonu, festival,
aktivite, gazete, yayıncılık, pazarlama, halkla ilişkiler, tanıtım, eğitim,
satış, sanatçı yönetimi alanlarının birinde faaliyet yürütmesi gerekmekte.
Yarışmaya katılabilmek için gerekli şartlar ise, 25-35 yaşları arasında olmak,
kendini iyi derecede sözlü ve yazılı ifade edebilecek İngilizce bilgisine sahip
olmak, belirlenen alanlardan birinde çalışmak ve Sektörde Türkiye’de geleceğin
liderlerinden olma potansiyeline sahip olmak. Yarışmaya son katılım tarihi 16
Eylül 2010, başvurular British Council sitesinden yapılacak.

Festivali, 24 Kasım’da gala ile başlayacak.
Festivalin açılışında ünlü sinema sanatçısı Hülya Koçyiğit’e “Yaşam Boyu Başarı
Ödülü” takdim edilecek.
Bu yıl kazanan filmin Birleşik Krallık ve İrlanda dağıtımında kullanılmak üzere
‘Golden Wings Digitürk Dijital Dağıtım Yarışması” birincisine 30 bin sterlin
para ödülü verilecek.
Bu yıl da geçmiş yıllarda olduğu gibi izleyicilerin oyları ile seçilecek film

Ercument Akman
Born 1950, Istanbul, Turkey, he is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University
teaching graduate courses and an advisor on Real Estate Graduate program. His
film writing and international film festival coverage appeared in Turkish
newspapers and magazines. He did research and film Programming at (Devlet Film
Arsivi) National Film Archive, State Academy of Fine Arts, Istanbul. Between
1987 and 1998 he was a director at Toronto Film Society for membership,
publicity and programming. He is the founder/director of Silk | ROAD (2004) a
digital production and film education company and the founder/editor of Turkish
Cinema Newsletter (1997 - 1998 Toronto | 1998 - 2010 Washington DC). He is
member of Film Programmers International and an independent curator of film
programs for Freer and Sackler Galleries of Art, National Gallery Art and Goethe
Institute. He juried and presented Turkish Films and directors in Istanbul,
Toronto, Washington DC and London based film festivals.
Louis Savy
Louis Savy is the founder and festival director for the London International
Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film (SCI-FI-LONDON), which just
celebrated its tenth anniversary. In addition, he runs regular workshops and
surgery sessions for the capital's film agency, Film London and the Independent
Cinema Office. Louis has produced many corporate films and developed projects
for young filmmakers across the country. He has a wide interest in film and
festivals and is currently writing a book on festival management and best
practice. He lives in London with his partner and three children.
Film regulations
Films must have been completed after January 1, 2010.
Films must be available for screening during the London Turkish Film Festival
2011.
Films being submitted should not have had any presence in prior UK Festivals and
events unless specifically agreed with The London Turkish Film Festival.
Films that have screened on network or cable television or distributed to
theatres in UK prior to the festival dates are also ineligible for competition.
Films must be feature length (60 minutes or more).
All films must be subtitled in English.
All copyrighted material included in the film must be cleared. LTFF will not be
held responsible for any inclusion of uncleared materials. It is the sole
responsibility of the entity submitting the project to secure permission from
the copyright holder of the material in question, whether it is music, stock
footage, or any other elements that could violate an existing copyright.
Additional Digital Distribution Award Regulations:
Entries for the 'Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award' must have all
UK and Irish distribution rights available.
Films applying to enter the 'Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award'
should not have had any presence in prior or subsequent UK Festivals unless

All UK distribution of the winning film will be undertaken by Drakes Avenue
Pictures on behalf of Turkish Films International.
The 'Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award' is granted on the basis
of the standard LTFF contract terms, a copy of which is available on request.
Distribution of the 'Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award' winner is
awarded solely to Drakes Avenue Pictures/Turkish Films International.
All UK rights to the winning film will be acquired by Drakes Avenue Pictures/Turkish
Films International.
Films competing for the 'Golden Wings Digiturk Digital Distribution Award' must
be Turkish productions or Turkish co-productions.

I, the undersigned, acknowledge and agree as follows:
I have read, understood, and complied with all eligibility requirements.
To the best of my knowledge, all the statements in this document are true.
This film is not subject to litigation and is not threatened by any litigation.
I hold The London Turkish Film Festival harmless from damage to or loss of any
submitted materials en route to the festival.
I am duly authorized to submit this film to the Festival.
I ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for the accuracy of the information supplied
I authorize the Festival to reproduce credits and company contact information in
its publications exactly as supplied.
If selected, I give my authorisation for publicity images, a synopsis and any
other relevant information to be included on festival publicity material and the
festival website (including clips of my film).
I hereby voluntarily assume any and all risks, known or unknown, associated with
my participation in the Festival and with my receipt and use of any Prize
associated therewith. I and my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns
hereby voluntarily forever release, discharge, waive and relinquish any and all
actions, claims or causes of action against the LTFF arising from or resulting
in any manner from my participation in the Festival and/or my acceptance and/or
use or misuse of the any Festival Prize.
