The American Turkish Society's signature cultural event, the New York Turkish
Film Festival will take place between December 12-15, 2019 at the SVA Theatre in
New York. #nytff
This year's Festival showcases a selection of five feature films, one
documentary and four short films, bringing the best of contemporary Turkish
cinema to you. This unique selection represents this year’s Festival Theme:
“Contemporary Struggles”. We live in times of constant change, of continuous
tensions, in times where building walls and barriers seems like the answer to
pressing issues. Yet, problems can only be solved through dialogue and cinema
can be a strong and beautiful tool to create that dialogue. The films and the
Q&A sessions after each screening offer an invaluable opportunity to reflect on
the difficulties ordinary people face at a personal and family level, on
societal pressures to maintain the status quo and at the same time on the
courage and resourcefulness of those who challenge the status quo and embrace
change as a way to move forward. While there are no easy answers, there is
certainty, which is the common thread connecting all films, whether it
materializes or fails to materialize: solidarity is what makes us human and hope
is what keeps us going.
So let this year’s festival theme take you to new places, enlighten and
entertain you, as we usher you into the world of Turkish cinema. We believe
there is no better way to tell a story than through cinema and we encourage you
to take part in our post-film sessions with several directors whose work is
featured at this Festival. We hope you will engage in the dialogue. We think you
will find these sessions fascinating and rewarding enhancements to your Festival
experience.
The 17th New York Turkish Film Festival
The 17th New York Turkish Film Festival presented a unique selection of films that represented the festival theme: “Contemporary Struggles.” The festival kicked off with Noah Land which won Best
Screenplay and Best Actor at the Tribeca Film Festival and screened nine other incredible films throughout the four days. The lineup included feature films Butterflies, Saf, La Belle Indifference and
Belonging; short films Stone, Green, Pandora’s Box and Interference; and a documentary, Ovacık which was the festival’s closing night film.
A selection of special post-screening Q&As were held after each screening with some of the films’ actors, directors and producers as well as industry professionals and special guests including Noah
Land’s Producer Alp Ertürk and Actress Hande Doğandemir; Saf’s Director Ali Vatansever with Assistant Professor of International Affairs at The New School, Everita Silina; La Belle Indifference’s Lead
Actor and Stone’s Director and Producer Alican Yücesoy; Butterflies’ Producer Diloy Gülün; Belonging’s Producer Selman Nacar; Green’s Director Suzanne Andrews Correa and Producer Mustafa Kaymak;
Pandora’s Box’s Director and Writer Irmak Taşındı, Producer Chloe Na and Lead Actress Noelle Lake; Interference’s Co-Director and Lead Actress Rüya Koman, Co-Director and Writer Robin Rose Singer,
Lead Actor Michael Chenevert, and Supporting Actress Rissa Davis; and Ovacık’s Director Ayşegül Selenga Taşkent; and Producer, Delizia Flaccavento with Professor of Film and award-winning documentary
filmmaker Sarah Elder.
For the first time this year, NYTFF presented an audience choice award to one of the films. By using POLTIO’s audience engagement platform, votes were collected to determine how much the audience
enjoyed the film. Following the screening, members of the audience scanned a barcode, which was projected on the screen. They were then led to a poll question asking them to rate how much they liked
the film. The votes were ranked on a point scale of 1 to 5 and a weighted average of votes was taken to determine an “audience like score” for each film.
We are excited to announce that “Butterflies” was the film with the highest average score and won The New York Turkish Film Festival Audience Award! We congratulate Producer, Diloy Gülün and Director,
Tolga Karaçelik as well as everyone on the film who contributed to the making of this film.
