The documentary focuses on the daily lives of young artists performing in the
streets and venues of İzmir. Each artist, with their own unique style and story,
meets audiences in public spaces, highlighting the importance of music in their
lives. Despite bans, pressures, and hardships, these young musicians strive to
sustain their art and lives, seeking support and solidarity. Their stories of
resilience and creativity, intertwined with the power of music, not only inspire
but also reveal the ways in which they hold on to life and nurture hope.
Playing on the Road reveals how music in the streets of İzmir resonates not only
as an art form but also as a way of expression and a way of life. At the heart
of this project lies the courage and passion of young musicians. Through their
music, they not only tell their personal stories but also reflect the rhythm of
the city and the diverse faces of society. As the director, my aim is to convey
these rhythms and voices in the most sincere way possible. The narrative of the
documentary will unfold through a realistic and heartfelt approach, portraying
the daily lives of the artists, their bond with music, and their struggle to
hold on to life despite all obstacles. Each character’s unique story and
connection with music will be intertwined with the vibrant fabric of İzmir’s
streets and venues. Through fluid editing and a dynamic camera style, the
audience will be immersed as if they were right there on the streets. Background
shots of the city, along with the musicians’ candid moments, conversations,
rehearsals, and performances, will draw viewers into the world of these young
artists. Visually, the camera will move in ways that bring the audience directly
into the heart of events. Avoiding static, conventional interview setups, I will
instead use dynamic and occasionally mobile shots that make the viewer feel part
of the environment surrounding the musicians’ lives and performances. Soft
lighting and a respect for the natural texture of locations will ensure each
scene maintains visual integrity. This approach will allow the energy of the
young musicians and the rhythm of the city to leave a deep impression on the
audience. Throughout the documentary, we will emphasize that music is not just
entertainment, but also a form of expression. The interviews with the musicians
will show how they resist challenges and how music serves as their source of
strength. Our main storyline will focus on Murat Toktaş (Bizon Murat), Ozan
Doğanay, and Sevgi Başar. Although they began producing music in different
periods, the similar struggles they faced will guide us to the core of the
issues. This perspective will reveal that, even though circumstances may change
over time, the roots of the problems often remain the same. The remaining
sections of the film will feature performances and short interviews with
musicians who are actively creating music in İzmir’s streets. By weaving
together the voices and harmonies of these diverse artists—producing in
different styles, venues, and stages of life—we aim to create an
interdisciplinary work that stylizes their music within the cultural and
architectural context of İzmir. Despite challenges, their music radiates with
hope and sincerity, underlining resilience and creativity. My ultimate goal as
the director is to show, through the eyes, voices, and instruments of these
young musicians, how art can trigger both individual and social transformation.
By the end of the film, I want the audience to connect not only with the music
but also with the hopes, dreams, and struggles for survival of these artists.
Finally, the warmth and camaraderie reflected in backstage conversations will
close the film with a heartfelt sense of authenticity.
All of this will highlight the power of music to unite people, inspire, and
foster solidarity. Playing on the Road invites viewers to hear the sounds of
İzmir’s streets and to be inspired by the stories of these young artists.
